Job Description Summary

Under general direction, utilize underground locating equipment to pinpoint the paths of cables and conduits that carry electrical control system utilities, prepare and provide locate data to City GIS mapping specialists, collaborate with GIS mapping specialists on mapping the City-owned street light and traffic signal electrical system, assist with all aspects of in-shop and on-site installation and maintenance of the City’s traffic control devices, City-owned street lighting systems, and a variety of other City related electrical projects. Work varies requiring interpretive judgment within prescribed standards and procedures.


Job Responsibilities

Locate, map, install, maintain, test, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, and electronic traffic control equipment including loop systems, video and radar detection, signal coordination, traffic preemption systems and other signal devices; perform locating and marking of related electrical and signal wiring; collaborate with mapping specialists on mapping electrical and signal systems, assist with installing signal spans, cables, street lighting and signal mounted signs; use lift truck to clean, inspect, maintain and repair pole and mast mounted equipment and signal heads; coordinate and/or install electrical fixtures on utility poles and light standards; measure and pull cable, assist electrical staff with rebuilding traffic control systems including digging trenches, install overhead and underground cable and conduit; dig holes for signals; program and upgrade controllers and emergency vehicle preemptions; review engineering plans and schematics for traffic signals, street lighting systems, illuminated street signs and other city related electrical projects; prepare and maintain work orders/records; assist with a variety of city electrical upgrades, maintenance and projects; participate in on call rotation, responding to emergency locate calls. Perform overtime and “On Call” duty as required and perform other duties as assigned. Advise engineering staff, developers, builders, utility companies, and property owners in electrical system matters.


Minimum Education & Requirements

High school diploma (GED). Journeyman Electrician license preferred and the ability to obtain IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician certification. Prior knowledge of electrical theory as applied to traffic signal circuits and wiring systems with ArcGIS experience preferred. Must possess a Class A within 12 months of hire.

Residency Requirement

Thirty (30) minute response time by way of the most direct route from the employee’s permanent residence to the employee’s assigned work site and within posted speed limits.
